Re: Burt Reynold's 1978 Black SE Trans Am to be Auctioned at No Reserve....
The Trans Am that was given to Burt Reynold's by Pontiac after the movie was finished was owned by the National Parts Depot as far as I knew. It used to be on the cover of their catalog. The auction doesn't say it was that car so I wonder. I have seen many illeged TA's that were owned by Burt Reynolds. I wonder if this is "the" Trans Am he got in 1978 or another he may have owned. Maybe Burt buys them and flips them.

I recall that Burt Reynolds was at the 2005 Mecum auction. He was there to sign the dash of one of his 1978 Trans Ams that he owned. And I have a photo of Burt in his 1979 Trans Am when he was retired in Florida.
I never read that Burt actually owned any of the Trans Ams that were used in the film "Smokey and the Bandit". If I recall all of the cars used for stunts in the movie were destroyed and only one was running for the last shots of the film; this was possible only because they cannibalized parts from other wrecked cars during the filming.
If this car in this auction is the "last remaining TransAm" used in the film then that would be a great story. Even if this is Burt's personal car then it should get big money on the auction block.
I recall that Burt owned several Pontiac Trans Ams including a few third generation TAs.
He may even own one of the super Bandit cars built by Year One that were sold a few years ago.
Would I buy it if I had the cash? No.
I don't think that the car would be worth the investment money in 10 or 20 years even with the pedigree.

The car that Pontiac gave Burt Reynolds was given to him after the movie was finished. The car was a '78 instead of a '77 like the ones used in the movie. All the cars used in the movie were said to be destroyed, or at least not working. They all went to the junkyard.

There were NO surviving cars from the movie. We have that directly from the director of the movie in an interview last year or the year before.

Here is an interesting interview with Burt Reynolds about Pontiac giving him a new Trans Am every year. He says he got one every year for six years and says he still has one, probably the one up for auction. I do remember National Parts Depot had a catalog that they said was the first one he received. I wonder what happened to all the 1980 Trans Ams from Smokey II. Lousy movie but cool cars.
